‘Tis the season of gift-giving, and if you’re thinking about things to get the driver in your life, here are some things I’ve run across that have been helpful to me at the track!
Racelogic VBOX
This is an incredible data tool that came out several years ago and continues to be refined. Not only is it a standard data system that logs all driver inputs, but it also utilizes an in-car camera to record both the driver and the view out the windshield. That video syncs in real time with the data.
I find this tool extremely helpful for drivers who really need that visual while reviewing data. It lets them see exactly where the car is on the track and what the inputs looks like, rather than just looking at the squiggly lines of data.
This can also be helpful when overlaying two data sets. It will show a side-by-side comparison of the video, so nuances like car placement and inputs are more easily spotted than going by a graph alone.
I find this style of data system has been by far one of the most resourceful pieces to successful coaching this season.
GPX Stream
This live on-board camera system is some of the newest technology on the market, and it allows for a team or coach to view live in-car video while the car is on track. Utilizing cellular technology, you can view the live in-car feed from a mobile device or tablet and provide immediate feedback to the driver, whether it’s a reminder about an upcoming corner or feedback about what has just transpired.
The latency is incredibly short, with typically just a few seconds of delay, so it’s virtually like watching a real time in-car feed.
Updated Driver Gear
This time of year is also good for going through your driver gear to see what items might be up for expiration in the coming year. The technology in driver gear continues to get better, with lighter and even safer designs. It’s just amazing what companies are able to do with not only the aesthetics of driver gear, but the continued safety improvements of the materials, as well.
It’s incredible comparing the differences between older gear and newer items, like a highly breathable driver suit or a lighter helmet. A newer design might even be safer than an older version. I’m impressed by how much these improved features can help with not only driver comfort but also performance.
Hopefully, these are some ideas for the driver in your life, at the holidays or anytime!
It’s been an incredible 2025, and I’m excited to get the 2026 season underway. Wishing everyone a warm and healthy holiday season, and I hope you’re able to enjoy some downtime as we prepare for the new year—and the new race season—ahead!
